The Texas Method Powerlifting Workout
This workout is a powerlifting / strength building program from Mark Rippetoe, an American strength training coach, author, former powerlifter and gym owner.
As a powerlifter Mark won the 198-pound weight class at the Greater Texas Classic in 1982, and placed in state – and regional – level meets for the next 6 years, retiring from competition in 1988. After retiring from powerlifting competition he helped organize powerlifting competitions in Texas and focused on coaching others in both powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting.
In his earlier days Mark was coached by Bill Star.
Note: one of our previous workout of the month programs focused on Bill Star’s 5×5 workout program.
Mark Rippetoe has worked with the CrossFit community as an expert in barbell training. He also authored many training articles for the CrossFit Journal and created the Basic Barbell Certification course. Needless to say this guy knows his sh!t when it comes to strength training!
The Texas Method Workout Routine
Basically the Texas Method Workout consists of training the major lifts with a higher volume training day on Monday, a lighter active recovery day on Wednesday, and a high-intensity day on Friday. Obviously the actual days of the week you train can vary based on your schedule, as long as you follow the program on 3 non-consecutive days per week.
This particular program is designed for an intermediate to advanced lifter. Someone who has experience with the 3 powerlifts (i.e. squat, bench press, and deadlift) and has at least a year of solid progressive strength training under their belt can follow this program.
